Research classical contents page 9

This is a one page conventional contents page.

There is an array of images at the top page which are different sections of the magazine, they have used these images to show case what is in these certain section and who is in them.

The contents page 'Masthead' is positioned on the top right of the page this has by what it looks like been placed there and it doesn't interfere with the remainder of the text. There is little white space and the contents page is quite busy.  It even though it is in contrasting black/grey and white the producers of this have chosen to use pink in the numbers. This may appeal more to a female audience which is unusual as many of the features are male biased. Perkins said "stereotypes are not simple' and this is evident in this page. There are no female sin the images, just this hint of pink. Pink may have been used to soften the look of the page.

The page titles and number take up the majority of the page being spread across the whole page, the page numbers are in a completely different colour of pink, which is very unconventional but it works as it is very easy for the reader to check pages.

The page also shows the magazine website this is shown by it being placed in the bottom right of the page, this is help of a magazine as you can look at previous issues and check various other thing that could influence you.

What I would include in my magazine from this:
- the clear list of the contents
- the photos which are above show whats in the magazine
- the web links at on the page

Research classical contents page 8

This contents page is very conventional as it has a list of the features and its numbers on the right hand side. The contents page 'masthead' is found at the top of the page, the font is a contrasting colour to background which helps the reader find what the page is about.

The contents page also presents a chance to win something this is shown by a bright puff, this is conventional and is used to make reader buy the magazine. This is very conventional as it as it has been used for reasons above before.

The photo which is presented in the middle of the page, this a very casual photo, which is conventional for the age of this magazine audience, it is also shot on location which has been also edited to look black and white.

All factors above have been used for a more pop/rock magazine which isn't my target audience, but i am willing to take parts from this contents page to use with my own.

What I would include in my magazine from this:- the simple list of the contents- the puffs are very easy to see and highlight certain things clearly

Research classical front cover 10

This is a very conventional magazine, as the BBC has all ways set out there front covers the same. The masthead isn't very contrasting to the background as it is san serif and the colour of the font is black.
The BBC is the publisher and producer of this magazine, this has been shown on the top left of the page, this is to allow it to be easily seen, and allows the publisher to have a lot of advertisement of its self on the magazine.

The picture on the front cover is a mix of conventional and unconventional, as the person being presented is in smart clothing and is looking at the camera (direct address). With the person wearing a suit it shows its for a more older/mature audience. The image is also taken on location which is also a very conventional thing to do on a classical magazine.

There is a pug and puff, this is conventional as it shows the reader that there is a variety of stories inside this helps the reader also to know some information about the magazine.

There is a puff on the magazine front cover showing that there is 120 reviews in this issue.
In addition there is another puff in the bottom on the page which includes some advertisement.

What I would include in my magazine from this:
- the photo has been made clear and the background is slightly blurred

Research classical front cover 9

This front cover is a mix of conventional and unconventional, the arrow to the right is an unusual pug and there is a large R in the bottom right corner. It is conventional as the magazine uses very simple and clear font (san serif).
The masthead is in a bright yellow which is very helpful to pull readers in as it is bright and contrasting to everything else on the page, it is also bold and san serif. This isn't very conventional though to older classic magazines are targeted at a older audience but this is using more colours and more classical fonts. I find the audience for this hard to define as they have used an image of a younger player yet i know the established audience is generally older. This makes me wonder if the institution is actually looking to widen the TA and therefore my  magazine does have a place in the real media market place.

The barcode is also quite unconventional as it isn't usually found on it s side along the right hand side, unlike the conventional way which is to have it horizontal and along the top of bottom of the front cover, or even they are found on the back of the magazine.
The barcode is also located next to the publisher 'Rhinegold Publishing' which has been again used unconventionally as it is presented on the front cover and its the companies logo not the usual just name of the publisher.

The front cover uses a space found at the bottom right to present the various/ main features found inside which will draw in readers, this has been also used as a small contents page which helps to explain simply what is found within this magazine.

The photo of the front cover is very conventional as it shows a performer in a location, using a instrument, this image has also been used as the front cover of the magazine as it shows the readers that the magazine applies to young people as well; it also shows the way the magazine is going as it is using more young and different ways of presenting the magazine.

What I would include in my magazine from this:
- the fact that it is a location shot
-the use of an instrument being played

Research: Institutions Research

The publisher Rhinegold Publishing was founded in 1977, and has been the publisher of some of the largest classical magazines such as 'Classical Music', 'Opera Now' and 'Choir and Organ'.

I will/ could use Rhinegold as my publisher, but to be able to get them as my publisher I will have to do something different, this is why my magazine will be targeted at a younger audience. This would mean that it will have more colour and serif fonts, this  would  appeal to more people as the style would appeal to a wider range of my TA.

They also have many events and this would help to publicise my magazine.
I like the idea of tickets as I could have a competition in my magazine.
They have twitter but not many other apps or social media contacts and this is a concern as I am targeting an audience that is digitally active.
My magazine would enable Rhinegold to target a wider market.  They also promote live events which I could advertise on my front cover or contents page.

It is interesting that they are looking for a wider audience and new products and this links back to an earlier piece of research i conducted when they seemed to be targeting two audiences: “We strive to offer news, reviews, topical columns and opinion pieces on music and the performing arts that are welcomed by our readers, respected by the music and performing arts sector, and valued by our commercial partners.”

One concern is that although subscriptions are available they use less digital technology than i would have liked. Perhaps this is something else that might appeal to the institution - they may start to use more if we can get a younger TA.
They are also a high quality producer and this appeals to me as i want my magazine to reflect quality music and maintain some of the conventions of classical.

In order to address this I could include the following in my magazine:
  • Own website
  • Magazine facebook page
  • apps
  • QR codes for adverts
  • Links to snapchat/ whatsapp

Research: Target Audience Profile

This is a Word Cloud that shows interests and places that the age group i'm looking to cater for is interested in.

My Target Audience- There age will be between the age of 15-21 this will allow me to have a teen and university audience. It will be a magazine not for a specific gender (unisex); it will be for all races, ethinicity and cultures. The magazine will be quiet expensive as the amount of colour and quality of paper will be high leading to a higher price magazine. The age of the TA (15-21) sometimes is a very relaxed age apart from education, leading them to maybe relaxing by using music.

Research 7 of my chosen genre: Classical Magazine Analysis- Contents Page

This contents page isn't usual to modern music magazine, which is usually a two page spread; but this shows the difference between a classical music magazine and 'Kerrang' or 'Q' which is a two page spread that is busier with photos and different colours. This contents page is very organised which is conventional to a Classical magazine, as it is for a more interlectual or older audience.

The title of this contents page is in a contrasting colour to the background that helps to stand out and make it recognisable. The banner breaks conventions and is in the centre of the page. I like this feature and it has influenced one of my decisions. This is a thin fine serif font that is also very simple again due to the audience the magazine has they don't want a complicated title. The date/issue is also located below this help to show the reader easily what the basic information is that might not be found on the front cover.

The contents page uses small sub headings to section off different page numbers for different parts of the magazine. They headings are also in a unconventional colour for a classical magazine, which is usually black or red, they have used pink which stands to make the magazine easily to navigate through. The pink also symbolises [Barthes] love, passion and femininity and the main feature is of a female.

The page titles and numbers are listed in a very organised order which has been used to make it easy for the reader. The writing is also in simple black and white as it doesn't need to be bright and colourful as the audience doesn't need to be bright. The page numbers are the same size as the headings for each feature. these are in bold.

How this research has influenced my planning and creativity

The size of the font on the images is effective and leads readers straight to main features. There is also great synergy as the image from the front cover also features on contents.

What I would include in my magazine from this:
- the clear list of contents
-the ordered and neat photos

My Choice Of Genre

My choice of genre was between Classical, Bands and Orchestras and Pop Rock.

I have chosen the Genre Classical, this is due to the research I have done and found various examples. The Genre is also a good choice as the image on the cover can be easily made to be of a high quality.

Research: Magazine Contents Page 6

This Magazine contents page is very conventional, this is due to the layout which is simple as they list the information down a side of the page, this is also conventional as the photo is the main feature and takes up the majority of the page. The photo is also used as a background as it is set in a studio and with a dark background to highlight the text, this is a conventional method as it is used a lot due, to the technology that can create backgrounds and setting is high detail.

What I would include in my magazine from this:
- I like the simplistic colour scheme
- the simple list of the contents and the large image

Research: Magazine Front Cover 7

This is a Magazine using a new and changing way to present the artist on there front cover, which is were they prioritise the photo above there masthead, this is becoming more and more conventional as the artist want to be the main feature. This Magazine relates to the idea of Richard Dyer, which shows Adam Levine as a quite arrogant, but this could just be to play to the camera to attract a female audience.

What I would include in my magazine from this:
- I like the clean/ clear colour scheme that the magazine has
- I also like the simplistic of the empty and simple photo

Research: Magazine Contents Page 5- Analysing/comparing Previous Research

These are the contents pages that I will be reviewing in this post, they have also both been in previous posts, the contents pages are also from different genre magazines. The top contents page is from 'Q' which is a modern magazine that uses very unconventional techniques, while the other is from 'Vintage Rock' which is a highly conventional and simple magazine more targeted at a specific audience. The first comparison is the layout and the way that they are similar due to the photos being quite large and the page numbers are specifically located on the photos. They are also similar because they have there page title are 'Contents' which is very basic and conventional. They are also very different as because 'Q' dots the page numbers and story information around the page using puffs, while 'Vintage Rock' is very conventional and simple with list the page numbers with the information next to it.

Research: Magazine Front Cover 6

This Magazine by Q, uses a mixture of codes and convections form the use of the artist being the centre holding his instrument, but they also use new/ different things, like the changing or over laying from the photo taking more importance than the masthead to the puffs that over lay the photo. The Magazines semiotics  of this magazine has got to be the use of the guitar which is a sign that the artist plays an instrument. The fact that the photo was taken in a studio was to make the magazine basic and clean so that the artist is the main feature on the front cover this is also very convectional.

What I would include in my magazine from this:
- The fact that the front cover is full but is clean and looks modern
- The colours of red, black and white

-Hammer- Summer 2014

-"metal should be rebellious. were the rebellion" Speth

-Synergy- Font- White, yellow, Black

-Contents is on page 7 and last 2 pages with the main feature of the magazine taking up 1 of the page

-13 items are on the contents page

-10 photographs on  the contents page

The Magazine uses a large Masthead which is found at the top of the page but not across the exact top as there is a banner which is there, but the Masthead is a similar shape to the photo beneath as the
sides of the masthead are acting like wings.

What I would include in my magazine from this:
- The impact of the contrasting masthead
